BROOKLIN AND THE MELS DRIVE IN RESTAURANT

In 1947 Mel Weiss and Harold Dobbs opened the first drive-in restaurant in San Francisco, Mels drive-in. At that time the drive-in restaurants were just beginning in America and the nice California weather was ideal for year round carhop service. It consisted of a large parking for 110 cars and a building with a dining room capacity of 75 people. The cooker was able to turn out 180 hamburgers per...

BROOKLIN AND THE 1949 BUICK ROADMASTER (BRK10)

Numerous variations of the 1949 Buick Roadmaster exist, due to a wide variety of shades for body color. Although generally thought of as being dark metallic grey, shades of dark silver, green, grey, violet have widely been seen. To increase the variation quantity even more, there are two castings of the Buick Roadmaster, early models with a small hood ornament and later versions without. It might be correct to say...

BROOKLIN AND THE 1989 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE

On October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, which lasted around 15 seconds, hit the San Francisco Bay Area, killing 67 people with more than 3,000 others injured and causing more than $5 billion in damages. Despite the fact that the disaster was one of the most powerful and destructive quakes ever to hit a populated area of the United States, the death toll was relatively small. The earthquake is...

BROOKLIN AND THE 1940 CHRYSLER NEWPORT (BRK8)

The 1940 Chrysler Newport was originally produced in dark and medium shades of metallic green in Canada. An off-white Canadian version was made for the National Model Car Convention. After Brooklin moved to England, a signal amber version was made. Two casting types, C2 and E2, do not have the raised Le Baron badge on the front fenders. The license plate is only on rear. The model was deleted in...

BROOKLIN AND THE 1934 CHRYSLER AIRFLOW (BRK7)

A single casting has been used for both Canadian and British production of the 1934 Chrysler Airflow, differing only in statement of country of manufacture on the baseplate. Early models are cream with blackwall tyres and blue license plates. Rectangular vents on the front fenders suggest that the model is specifically the Chrysler CU Airflow four-door sedan. Other details, including the windshield wipers, triple-blade bumpers and rear fender skirts, create...

BROOKLIN AND THE CARRERA PANAMERICANA

The Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border car racing event on open roads in Mexico similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. This gruelling race ran South to North, from Tuxtla Gutierrez, near the Yucatan Peninsula, to Nuevo Laredo, just short of the Texas border, a distance of 1.372 miles. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was described as the most dangerous race of...
