Before 1954 Plymouth had a reputation as an old maid’s conveyance. Then Virgil Exner arrived at Chrysler Corporation and the following year the stereotype was blown away forever with styling that was widely admired and even copied by others. And that wasn’t the only prejudice at risk that year: Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person and the national civil rights movements begun. In the same year another car became sadly famous: it was the Porsche 550 Spyder that James Dean was driving when died at the age of 24.
