1951 marked the high point for Hudson’s classic ‘stepdown’ design. Conceived in the mid 1940s by Frank Spring and Reid Railton the design was at first rejected by Hudson’s President Barit who later changed his mind after trying a prototype and reportedly ordered it into production for the 1948 model year. The car’s low sleek lines were reminiscent of Railton’s designs for John Cobb’s Railton Mobil Special land speed record car and the style of construction was named ‘monobuilt’ by Hudson.
