PRODUCT INFORMATION

The Depression years had not been kind to Cadillac, with sales that had declined from over 18,000 units in 1929 to only 6,000 in 1933. The Depression years and a lineup with too many models with small differences in construction and finishes made production uneconomical, generating huge losses. A new general manager reorganized the Cadillac division, cutting the variety of models to a more reasonable number, sharing the bodies with those of the other General Motors divisions, and rationalizing engines and other mechanical parts. The V12 engine was discontinued at the end of the 1936 model year and the V16 followed the same fate four years later. Besides, the 346 cubic inch V8 engine, introduced in 1936, was the most powerful and reliable engine ever produced, with performance very close to the V12 and V16 engines. The 346 engine was a masterpiece of construction and reliability, powering cars and military vehicles, and would stay in production until 1949.

In 1938 the 75 sedan was also available in the “Imperial” and “Formal Sedan” versions. All the Cadillacs of this period were equipped with a 5.8 L V8 engine.
