Tony Vandervell’s patriotic quest to “beat those bloody red cars” culminated in his Vanwalls winning the inaugural World Championship for Constructors in 1958 and in the first home win for a British car and driver in the 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree. Unfortunately no drivers’ championship was forthcoming despite Moss winning 3 Grand Prix in 1957 and both Moss and Brooks winning three each in 1958.
Prior to the British Grand Prix Tony Brooks, who was recovering from injuries sustained at the Nurburgring and was not expected to be able to last the full race distance, had agreed that if anything happened to team mate Moss’s car, he would hand his car over. And so it came to be. Brooks was called in; Moss took over car number 20 and duly won the race in Vanwall VW6. Today the car can be seen at the wonderful Revs Institute in Naples Florida, formerly the Collier Collection.
