In the early 1950’s Alfa Romeo instructed designer Franco Scaglione to produce a series of experimental aerodynamic designs. The resulting BAT (Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica) cars were the most outlandish designs ever seen, with their huge curving rear fins. Not all the designs were produced, but in 1953 Carrozzeria Bertone built BAT 5 on an Alfa Romeo 1900 chassis, and it was shown at the Turin Motor Show. The design was refined, and exaggerated, in 1954 to from BAT 7. Both cars were reunited, along with the more sober BAT 9, at the 1989 Pebble Beach Concours in the USA.
